On Sunday, September 1 Christian families in a Nigerian village were doing morning devotionals at 5am in their homes. According to Gabriel Anthony, a 25-year-old villager:“Within minutes, bullets were piercing into our rooms,” Anthony told Morning Star News. “I escaped from my room by jumping through the window.”
Mr. Anthony lost seven relatives in the attack including his father, mother, 2 brothers, and three nephews. The youngest killed was his 5-year-old nephew Meshack Aaron. Two other Christians
were murdered and three wounded in the attack on the village. The three wounded were 3, 5, and 9 years of age. Also according to Anthony:
“By the time the Fulani gunmen had moved to other houses in the village, the sounds of gunshots had forced the over 500 inhabitants of the village to flee into the bushes, thus escaping from being killed.”
The attack was carried out by Fulani herdsmen who belong to an Islamist group. The villagers say that Islamist groups have increasingly incited the herdsmen to attack Christians and take over their lands to acquire grazing areas, stockpile arms, and expand Islamist territory. According to the Reverend Yakuba Gandu Nkut:
“I don’t understand the reasons behind these attacks on our people by these Fulani herdsmen,” he said. “Several meetings have been held with their leaders in order to resolve whatever are the differences. However, in spite of promises by these Fulani leaders that these attacks will not occur again, we have continued to witness these beastly attacks.”
“As you are here, you can see that my family is not here in this village,” Nkut said. “The reason is because since Sunday, these Muslim Fulani herdsmen have been attacking Christian villages around here. On Monday up to yesterday [Sept. 4], some of the Muslim gunmen were here to attack this community, but they were repelled by the people. And because of this, almost everybody has left the village.”
Unfortunately, Islamist extremists believe that there is no sin in lying to infidels in order to expand Islamist territories. Lies will be told, treaties will be broken, and many more will probably die. If we have a responsibility to protect, why is it only invoked when (Shia) Islamists are killing (Sunni) Muslims? Our president seem to have no problem when the Sunnis are doing the killing or if either side is murdering Christians or other peoples.
